Exeter Cathedral is well worth a visit. As with so many of the large churches in this country, you need to pay to get in if you’re not attending a service, but it’s well worth the £6 fee – particularly if you take along your camera when there’s plenty to see.
There’s a clock there, roughly in line with the altar, with a small door in the front of its body. This was apparently to allow a cat to get inside to catch the mice, which were attracted to the workings of the clock by the animal fat that used to be smeared onto its workings to keep it lubricated.
It was, apparently, the origin of the nursery rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock.
