Nimes, in the far south of France, has a wonderfully-preserved Roman arena. Rather than use it purely for guided tours and attractive backdrops, though, the city council hosts rock and pop concerts right inside it – and bullfights, too.
To underscore that point, this life-sized statue of a matador stands in the large open square outside of the arena. He should be fully illuminated but the trees were starting to grow over the spotlights when I took this picture, allowing for his feet and cape to be illuminated against the darker floor, while his torso falls into silhouette against the brightly lit arena behind.
