Orford Ness was once a top secret government test site for military development. It played a large part in British efforts to build a nuclear bomb.
Fortunately it’s since been decommissioned, and it welcomes visitors, who need to take a short boat ride to get there from the boat ramp at Orford. The buildings, which are seemingly being allowed to slowly are fascinating, with harsh contrasts between old wooden structures like this tower and the brutalist concrete bunkers.
It’s an enormous site, and you can easily spend a day there, although with the chance of wandering onto unexploded ordnance if you stray from the path it’s well worth watching your step.
